Kaia was sitting in her room waiting for her mom to leave. She always left at the same time every day, she always left with the same damn words to. ”If your good for nothing brother comes home, tell him he’s in deep shit.” and with that her mother left the house. Wasn’t she a pleasant woman? She just radiated motherly love. Kaia sighed as she took off her oversized DJ headphones and set them on her desk. She frowned at the door. Her brother was never home... lucky bastard. She knew he didn’t feel the need to be with their mother like Kaia did... Her mother felt more like a responsibility to Kaia than anything else. She had to be there... she owed her mother that much. Kaia didn’t intend on sticking around the house if her mother was gone. She already finished her homework for the weekend, and she definitely already finished texting her brother to not come home because he was in deep shit. Sure her brother could have been around more, but that didn’t mean that Kaia wanted to subject him to the same abuse that she had to endure. Kaia found her escape in sneaking out in the middle of the night to go dancing, or by finding a quiet place to just listen to music.
Music was the only thing keeping Kaia in the edge of sanity, although with her mother being the way she was everyday she was pushed closer and closer to the edge. Ironically she was just listening to the Linkin Park song, Closer to the Edge. Kaia smiled a little bit as she looked out the window just to see her moms car zoom away. Out in public, her mom was the sweetest woman in the world, you would never think she would verbally abuse her children... but behind closed doors she was completely different. She was cruel and almost unloving... unless she was drunk, then she was just as loving and just as cruel. Kaia missed her dad, but knew why he left. She knew the reason that kept her brother from coming home. She knew her mother probably had a good reason for doing do what she was doing... Kaia jut sighed before walking towards her door to see if it was unlocked. Kaia could lock her door from the inside, but her mother had installed a chain door lock on the outside. It didn’t matter of Kaia locked herself in, her mother had the choice whether to let her out or not. When she unlocked the door and opened it, she was relieved to see that her mother hadn’t locked her in. Kaia made a quick dash to grab her bad and her iPod before she walked out of her room.
She made a quick stop in the kitchen to make herself a sandwich and grab a water bottle. When she finished making her sandwich, which was peanut butter and jam, she put it in a plastic baggie and grabbed a bottle of iced tea. She put both in a small lunch bag and added an ice pack before she grabbed checked her wallet to see how much money she had. Kaia made some good cash working at some of the clothing stores part time, and since her mother didn’t really provide her any cash, she used it to pay for most of things herself. Kaia had a bank account which her mom set up, then she had a separate one that was hers alone to control. Everything she made when she worked went into that account. She took a lot of precautions when it came to leaving her house when her mother was at work, just in case she’d have to get a room at a hotel for the night... or pay for her brothers bail.
Kaia loved her twin brother, but he was always in trouble for something or another. He already had a criminal record that her mom didn’t know about. Instead of calling their parents, the station always called Kaia. The last time the station had called Kaia’s mom she told them to let him rot in there for all she cared. Kaia was the one smart enough to go down, talk to the officers, and bail her brother out. He could be a little smarter next time and just not do whatever he’s planning on doing but noooo, he couldn’t do that. Kaia got the sense while Kael got all the will. Sighing, Kaia adjusted the bag on her shoulder and began her walk to the park. She plugged her iPod headphones into her iPod and then into her own ears. The song ‘That ain’t Class’ by Classified was playing. Kaia tapped her fingers against her side to the beat of the song was she walked.
When she did get to the park Kaia just smiled and breathed in the fresh air. It was peaceful here... and Kaia was just glad she had this little piece of space to retreat to. It was serene here... and that alone was the reason Kaia came here. Even if her mother went looking for her, it was public enough so that her mother wouldn’t want to make a scene. It was her safe haven... and Kaia might be dead without it. She found a park bench and sat down, she had one headphone in her ear and one headphone out so she wouldn’t be as surprised when someone walked up on her.... Kaia was easy to scare and someone of her classmates had a tendency to take advantage of that.
